Before our café even opens, I’ve been on a mission: meeting local makers, discovering inspiring mompreneurs, and learning from the people who make Vestal feel like home. One of my favorite connections so far? Sarah, the founder of 607 Plants, a cozy plant shop right here in Vestal, NY.
Our story started in the simplest way — I bought a toddler bed from her on Marketplace — and now, thanks to Sarah, I’m constantly networking with other local creators and learning about the incredible mom-owned businesses in our community. Through her, I’ve discovered that plants aren’t just décor; they’re a way to bring life, light, and connection into your home — and a way to grow community.
From Lowe’s Clearance Rack to Community Roots
“I was new to the area and a stay-at-home mom,” Sarah shares. “I hadn’t met many friends yet and needed something just for me. Once I got those plants and saw them growing so well, I felt like I was really doing something. It felt good.”
Those early plants weren’t just décor — they became a source of purpose during a season when Sarah was building her life and connecting with the Vestal community. When her daughter began full-day Pre-K, Sarah faced a choice: return to a traditional 9-to-5 job or follow her passion. She chose the latter and began turning her love for plants into 607 Plants, a business rooted in creativity, community, and growth.
Creating a Cozy, Authentic, Creative Space
Walk into 607 Plants, and Sarah wants you to feel one thing immediately: at home.
Influenced by motherhood, she designed the shop to be safe, welcoming, and unintimidating. Whether you’re a seasoned plant parent or buying your very first houseplant, the space invites curiosity and comfort.
“I hope people feel comfortable enough to ask any questions and really make themselves at home while they’re here,” Sarah says.
She sums up the shop’s vibe in three words:
Cozy
Authentic
Creative
Every detail is intentional, reflecting her hope that visitors, young and old, feel inspired and comfortable.
The Realities of Running a Small Business
Opening a small business in New York isn’t without challenges. For Sarah, the biggest hurdle wasn’t logistics — it was mom guilt.
“The biggest challenge has been myself — wondering if I will still be enough for my family while running the business,” she admits.
With support from her husband and family, Sarah is learning that nurturing a business doesn’t take away from motherhood — it can add to it. Her advice to other moms is simple but powerful:
“Do it. I hope one day my daughter, Kate, looks back and this makes her think she can do anything.”
Spotlight: Her Favorite Plant
Ask Sarah about her favorite plant, and she lights up. Right now, it’s the Alocasia, with its bold, striking leaves — a reflection of the beauty she hopes every visitor finds in her shop.
What’s Next for 607 Plants?
While the shop is currently filled with Sarah’s favorites, she has exciting plans for the Vestal community. Keep an eye out for:
• DIY Workshops: Succulent gardens and beginner-friendly bonsai projects
• Plant Care Services: Repotting and plant “troubleshooting”
• Private Events: Host your next gathering surrounded by greenery
Sarah envisions 607 Plants as more than a store — it’s a space for learning, connecting, and growing together.
